A few local grocery stores carry copious amounts of Blue Bell pints. During my latest visit to Ingles to pick up a few things, I decided to grab a few of the smaller portions so I could try some more flavors without having to invest in an entire half gallon. I hadn't seen or heard of Butter Crunch prior to seeing this bright yellow carton. I had barely even begin to scratch the surface of what Blue Bell had to offer. I hardly remembered even throwing this one in my cart by the time I arrived home and started putting things away. After stowing away most of my other groceries, I decided to go ahead and put a few bites out of their misery.I pried the lid off and was greeted with an off white looking vanilla ice cream with small brown and amber flakes.
Blue Bell describes Butter Crunch as vanilla flavored ice cream with chunks of crunchy chocolate peanut butter candy. Although it doesn't sound too complicated, I was caught off guard by how effective this simple combination could be. The consistency of the vanilla flavored ice cream is light, fluffy and possessed a nice density without the heaviness of a true super-premium. Coming in at only 180 calories per serving, this can easily be fit into anyone's diet, or in my case, my lunch break. The simple base served as a solid foundation to showcase the chunks of candy that infiltrates every bite.
The bits of chocolate peanut butter candy are broken up into bits so small that they give the entire feel of Butter Crunch an interesting texture. The chocolate and peanut butter linger around considerably longer than the vanilla ice cream, requiring a few bites before they fully break down, giving the finish to each spoonful a rich aftertaste. The end result is a spot-on impression of a Butterfinger Blizzard from Dairy Queen.
