REVIEW: Mr. Green Tea Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla


Back in September of 2015 I had the pleasure of performing my own Mr. Green Tea taste test on the six available flavors including incredible creations such as Ginger and Fortune Cookie. Our initial experience with this New Jersey-based creamery showed us first-hand the effectiveness of their choice to use only rBGH free milk & cream, pure cane sugar, hand-picked tea leaves, imported azuki beans, fragrant baby ginger & authentic chai spices. By using top-notch ingredients, you get top-notch ice cream. More recently this company started making the flavor shown above, Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla: all natural ice cream made with pure bourbon vanilla.


We have always had the ability to appreciate a base-only vanilla ice cream on this blog and Mr. Green Tea seems to have done their version the right way. Using the aforementioned all-natural ingredients, Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla ends up with the ideal off-white color you'd want from a vanilla. We've experienced the consistency of Mr. Green Tea's ice cream before, but this is a beautiful reminder of you get what you pay for. This ice cream is slow to melt down, which allows all the complex vanilla flavoring to take full effect on your taste buds.


While the feel was fantastic, the flavors were even better. To fully understand the Madagascar Bourbon vanilla concept, I turned to the internet. According to another blog, Baking Bites, it's explained as so:

Vanilla is one of the most important flavors in baking and we use both vanilla beans and vanilla extract in our recipes. When you see vanilla in the store, you probably notice that there are quite a few types of vanilla available. Sometimes, you’ll simply see plain old vanilla, but there is also Tahitian, Mexican and Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla is the most common, as Madagascar produces most of the world’s supply of vanilla, and it is often written simply as “Bourbon Vanilla.” Although vanilla extract is made up of at least 35% alcohol by volume, the “bourbon” in “Bourbon Vanilla” is not the name of the alcohol used to make it. Bourbon vanilla is the name for all vanilla grown in Madagascar and other islands in the Indian Ocean, including Comoros and Réunion. Réunion was formerly known as the Île Bourbon, and it is the name of that island that gave Bourbon Vanilla its name. Bourbon vanilla beans come from the orchid V. planifolia. Bourbon vanilla beans have a high vanillin content and a very strong, clear and creamy vanilla flavor that is instantly resognizable and a great addition to any recipe.

The result was a great base-only ice cream that we'd suggest trying out if you ever decide to pull the trigger on an 8-pack sampler pack from Mr. Green Tea.
