Blue Bell's latest re-entry into the ice cream market is an old favorite, "Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough". Blue Bell describes this flavor as "A rich, creamy ice cream with chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough and chips of dark chocolate". I love ice cream and chocolate chip cookies, so this combo is always one I look forward to. But having tried this flavor from many brands, how would Blue Bell's version stand up?
Cracking open the lid, you see a basic vanilla-type base, with a sprinkling of chocolate chips and no sign of cookie dough. Not a promising start. But first impressions can be deceiving, and this is the case here, because as one digs through the ice cream, lots of mix-ins become apparent. Flavor-wise, the vanilla base is fine, and "creamy" describes it quite well. Nice, but nothing special. The dark chocolate chips have a good taste and we do get a lot of them. But, the chips are small, not full chocolate chips, so this mitigates their impact on the palate. What raises this flavor to another level is the cookie dough chunks. First, they really are chunks - healthy square-sized dollops. Second, we get a ton of them! These chunks litter the container top to bottom. They are all over the place. Last and best, the chunks of cookie dough taste great. These chunks are soft and grainy on the outside, and chewy on the inside, and taste like honest to goodness cookie dough.
This dough combines with the chips and base to create a flavorful synergy in the mouth. Overall, I'd say that Blue Bell's version of this old classic compares pretty well with the competition. It's good to have it back.
