As part of its re-entry into the market, Blue Bell recently re-released their version of the old favorite, Buttered Pecan. Blue Bell described Buttered Pecan as "rich butter pecan ice cream with lightly salted roasted pecan halves". Frankly, while this ice cream sounds tasty, I had always passed over it in favor of more fancy flavors loaded with exotic mix-ins. But with Blue Bell's offerings still very limited, I was taking what I could get. So how does Buttered Pecan taste?
To my surprise, I regret that I have slept on this flavor before. Buttered Pecan delivers on the description: The base ice cream is rich, it tastes very pecan-y and very buttery. You don't mind having a bite that lacks the pecan halves because this base is creamy and tasty on its own. But, those bites are few and far between, because Buttered Pecan is loaded with pecans! These pecans are lightly salted and roasted, and they appear in abundance. Just about every spoonful has a few of them. Best of all, as promised, these roasted pecans are not shavings or chips, rather the vast bulk of them really are real halves. These halves taste great, and combined with the creamy rich base add up to a real mouth-explosion treat.
When I dug into this flavor, I was sure it would earn a grade of "C", just because, well, there's only so much flavor that pecans and a base ice cream can provide, right? Wrong! The combination of the buttery pecan base and salty roasted pecan halves is good enough to move things up a notch.
