REVIEW: Ben & Jerry's Half Baked FroYo

It's hard to believe, but after reviewing practically every Ben & Jerry's flavor released over the past 3-4 years, not once have I had the urge to try their FroYo. Plenty of people swear by the stuff and enjoy it often in an attempt to make a "healthier" snacking decision. I on the other hand, feel if I'm going to indulge in ice cream, it needs to be the real deal. I'll sacrifice in my diet elsewhere or spend more time in the gym in order to offset the need for an ice cream substitute to save calories, but that's just me. Ben & Jerry's traditional Half Baked received full marks in our rankings and comes in at 270 calories, while this lighter version has 90 less at only 180 calories per serving.

The FroYo features a strikingly similar description to its ice cream counterpart, "chocolate & vanilla low fat frozen yogurts mixed with gobs of chocolate chip cookie dough & fudge brownies." Besides substituting frozen yogurts for their standard ice cream, this seems to be the exact same creation minus 360 calories per pint.

While we appreciate the simplistic, effective nature of Ben & Jerry's chocolate and vanilla bases found in their standard Half Baked flavor, the gobs of cookie dough and famous Greyston Bakery Brownies are what make this a fan favorite, not necessarily the ice cream itself. With that said, the chocolate and vanilla frozen yogurts are an acceptable substitute, and besides the loss of a heavier consistency and richer taste, didn't hinder the overall effectiveness of this proven combination of flavors too much.

The large cookie dough chunks and brownie squares were some of the best distractions Ben & Jerry's could have chosen. I was too busy enjoying the classic mix-ins to even notice the downgrade in the foundation of this flavor. If cutting calories is a necessity as warmer months approach, this pint might be worth investing in.
