I had occasion to try a new flavor from McConnell’s: Whiskey & Pecan Pralines. This pint is emerging as a regular in their rotation, with more widespread availability spring of 2016.
The package has this to say: Central Coast milk & cream spiked with rich, mouth-coating, smoky ‘n spicy Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. Fold-in legendary Mascot Pecan’s® buttery, salt-roasted ‘n caramel-coated pecans, and it’s pure punch-you-in-the-gut meets kiss-you-in-the-rain deliciousness.
Most ice cream companies use whiskey extract, which is cloyingly sweet and not really on target, flavor-wise. For this one, McC’s uses good ‘ol Jim Beam whiskey, which they add to their base. They fold in pecans in praline from legendary Georgia praline purveyors, Mascot. The result is a super-balanced, deep flavor with just the right whiskey hit, and the comforting salty-sweet nuttiness of the pecan pralines.
This ain’t kid’s stuff. In fact, this flavor is one of the great “break glass in case of emergency” flavors I have in my freezer, maybe not for the reasons you might think. The alcohol in the base makes this one scoop easily right from the freezer, perfect for when you can’t wait those extra few minutes to let the ice cream temper and soften.
