With bathing suit season in full effect, we've seen an increased demand to show off some lighter calorie "ice creams" to keep us company on those long, hungry nights while we wish for abs. That's where companies like Halo Top come in to play. Halo Top, like others, have made low calorie ice cream pints that put an emphasis on protein. To fitness fanatics like myself, this can make cutting a whole lot easier than only enjoying a single serving of full-fat ice cream (or none at all).
Packing an impressively low 240 calories and 280 calories per pint, Halo Top's Mint Chip and Chocolate Mocha Chip also manage to add 24 grams of protein to your macros. With those kind of returns on your investment, this could be a bodybuilder's best friend if you were judging a book by its cover. When it comes to ice cream however, taste and consistency are a must. Otherwise, I'll just stick to smaller servings of the good stuff and get my protein elsewhere.
Both of the pints took a considerable amount of time, around 5-10 minutes to thaw down to an acceptable consistency. Obviously, we've taken into account the ingredients of the ice cream and have realistic expectations as far as feel is concerned.
"Chocolate. So incredibly indulgent but oh so wonderfully blissful. What to do? Now you can have the best of both worlds. It may be in low in calories, but we’ve spared nothing in creating this delectable ice cream, including using Callebaut Belgian Chocolate, voted “Best Overall Cocoa” by Cooks Illustrated Magazine. The fine folks at Callebaut hand-pick their premium rare cocoa beans before roasting them to perfection and using them as the base of their cocoa powder. What more could you ask? How about almost twice the protein as sugar? Consider it done."
The mocha taste came through loud and clear, even over the sub-par, icy consistency, but was enjoyable enough to act as an appropriate substitute given what we were dealing with. No, this isn't necessarily what you think of when you think of chocolate ice cream, but if you're looking to watch your weight and add in some extra protein, the Chocolate Mocha Chip may be a decent way to satisfy your cravings.
The second flavor we tried, the Mint Chip, shared the same consistency, a ton of mint flavor, and some small black specks that I think were supposed to be chocolate chips. Even if you aren't a fan of chocolate, we'd probably go for another one of their flavors like Lemon Cake before this one.
It's nice to see that some of the companies are gearing their products towards higher protein and less calories. Obviously it wouldn't be fair to judge these with ice creams created solely for taste, so I urge to try some out if you haven't before. You might find a half (or even a whole!) pint may be enough to keep your diet on track.
