READER REVIEW: Timothy's Review of Private Selection Huckleberry Pie

I had just eaten a big lunch but I was still hungry for something sweet. I decided to stop into Fry's to possibly get one of those single serving ice cream cups for $1.00 (Ben & Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs usually). I was browsing the ice cream selection and I came across a Kroger brand called "Private Selection". There were a few flavors available and at the time, the most appealing one was the Huckleberry Pie. This was described as "Huckleberry ice cream laced with cinnamon ribbons and studded with buttery streusel pie clusters". This pint was only a $1.00! What did I have to lose?

I took the pint out to my car and took off the lid. I noticed the light purple, almost pinkish, color of the base. I could also see some of the pie clusters peeking through. I took a bite and noticed that this ice cream was a bit "fluffy". It was not as dense as some other brands and almost like a frozen whipped cream type texture. I mean, for a buck, you can't expect too much...right? The huckleberry flavor was decent. It was a tad tart and not as sweet as I thought it would be and/or prefer. The pie clusters were awesome! They were chunks of cinnamon pie dough for the most part. They reminded me of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal but more chew and thick. They were a great mix in and were plentiful throughout! As I made my way through the pint, I found lots of the cinnamon ribbons/swirl, too. Those pieces of pie and cinnamon swirl added a much needed sweetness to the pint.

Overall, it was decent. I thought the huckleberry flavor was just ok, but the pie pieces and cinnamon swirl were actually really good! I don't think I will be buying this flavor again but I will take a flyer on some of their other flavors of ice cream. For a measly $1.00, even if you only took a few bites of this brand and tossed the rest in the trash, it would be worth a buck!
