I was shopping at Sprouts the other day...ok, not really shopping per say, but I always stop in occasionally to browse their ice cream selections. I wasn't in the mood for a full pint of anything so I decided to go with a Coolhaus "Mies Vanilla Rohe" ice cream sandwich. This sandwich is Tahitian Vanilla Bean Ice Cream sandwiched between 2 Chocolate Chip Cookies. Sounded delicious! Before we get to how it was, a little bit about Coolhaus.........
Coolhaus was started in Los Angeles, CA by Natasha Case and Freya Estreller back in 2008. They came from a background of design and real estate. They baked cookies, made ice cream and started naming their creations after architects and architectural movements that inspired them. They purchased a postal van, started selling their creations at Coachella in 2009 and the rest is history! They now have 11 ice cream trucks, 2 storefronts, and sell their products in over 1500 specialty/high end supermarkets across the USA! So how was my first experience with their ice cream? You are about to find out!
I took the sandwich out to my car and unwrapped this beast. It is rather large for an ice cream sandwich. A serving size is half of it (245 calories), but who in their right mind is only going to eat half? Not I, says the fly! The first thing I noticed were that the cookies were not rock hard. That is a good thing. Sometimes during freezing, or without the use of quality ingredients, some cookies in other brands of ice cream sandwiches can be a bit "tough". These cookies were fantastic! They were soft enough to hold and bite through with ease, but sturdy enough to hold the ice cream together and not melt/disintegrate while you were eating. They were incredibly chewy and just sweet enough. It was a perfect vehicle to deliver the ice cream. Speaking of that..... the Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream was delicious. You could see the tiny specks of vanilla bean in it and the flavor was great. It was dense, melted slowly and had a great creamy and smooth texture. The portion size of ice cream was plenty!
The Mies Vanilla Rohe sandwich was currently on sale at Sprouts for $3.99. Some may say that the price point is a little high. I thought so too myself, but once you unwrap this beauty and try it for yourself, the price is totally justified! This is one hell of a gourmet ice cream sandwich and definitely one of the best I have ever had! I can't wait to try out their other ice cream sandwich flavors as well as their pints of ice cream! If they are as good as this sandwich, I'll definitely be happy!
