I never heard of the “Three Twins” brand until I saw it at Sprout's Market a few months ago. I was curious to try it, but then again, myself, I usually don’t go for the “organic” or “natural” brands of things. I mean, how much better could it be than regular stuff, right? I would soon find out that their organic ice cream is excellent! Three Twins was kind enough to send me a few coupons to try out their products and I went to my local Fry’s store at lunch to grab a pint. Turns out that Fry’s only carries one flavor of their ice cream (Sea Salted Caramel), whereas I know that Sprout’s carries more variety. Since I was already at Fry’s, Sea Salted Caramel it was! I took it out to my car and dug in. Here is how it was...
Sea Salted Caramel is described as “An alchemy of cream and sugar that’s worth its taste in gold”. Three Twins uses only organic ingredients in their ice cream. There is a cool little story on their website on how it took a while to find an organic caramel producer. They also support Ice Cream for Acres which is cool! I took off the lid and noticed the caramel colored ice cream. It was a little “sweaty” around the edges and the base looked like it would melt pretty quick (it did). I took a bite of the ice cream and was very impressed! The texture of the first few bites was a little bit icy but not in a bad way. It sort of reminded me of eating those Thrifty Frozen Malts you get at baseball games. Similar texture. After some of the melted goodness was scraped away, I encountered the smooth core of the pint. This caramel ice cream was delicious and just sweet enough. It was light enough but still rich and decadent (there are only 800 calories in the whole pint). The salt component was pretty low too, which I appreciated. You really only need a little bit of salt to tie into the caramel base and this pint was a perfect balance of the two flavors. After taking a few bites, I even got an aftertaste of almost a mocha/coffee flavor. Kind of hard to describe, but it was a delicious aftertaste. I plowed through the pint and loved every second of it!
Overall, I can see myself craving this pint in the future. It was so simple, yet so delicious. I usually enjoy some kind of mix ins in my ice cream, but this pint, without any mix ins, was still fantastic! Each and every bite was just as good as the first. My first experience with Three Twins was a great one and I can’t wait to try out their other flavors!
