This would be my fifth pint/flavor of Steve's ice cream I have gotten to eat. So far, I have had two great ones, one good one and one average one. They all had good/great aspects of them and I will hopefully make it through most of their flavors in the next few months. I have looked for this specific flavor previously but never had any luck finding it in stock. I was at Whole Foods today and this pint was buried on the bottom shelf and was the last one of its kind left in the freezer. I knew I had to grab it. Mexican Chili Chocolate is described as "Chocolate Ice Cream Spiced with Cayenne, Cinnamon and Guajillo Chili Chocolate". I have only had a "spicy" ice cream once before (Jalapeno Strawberry Cheesecake from Creole Creamery in New Orleans, LA) and I really enjoyed it. It was one of the best flavor combos I have ever had. I was extremely intrigued by this flavor and couldn't wait to dig in. I took it out to my car and had at it. Here is how it was...........
I removed the lid from the pint and noticed that there were some small holes/air pockets on top of the pint. It had a slight icy texture on the top layer and it had begun to sweat around the edges. I took a bite noticed the great tasting chocolate base that Steve's is known for as well as a good hint of cinnamon. It reminded me of eating a chocolate style rice pudding. The ice cream was not as smooth as past pints, but once it melted a bit, it became more creamy. It was a tad icy the whole way through, though. After tasting the chocolate and cinnamon, I could feel a distinct little tingle in the back of my throat. BAM! The slight chili burn! It was by no means "hot", but it definitely let you know that there was a spicy aspect in there. I studied the pint as I was eating it and could see tiny little red specks (chili) throughout the pint. I kept digging in and eventually came across a little mix in. It was the only guajillo chocolate piece in the pint and it didn't rear its head until all the way down at the bottom. A previous review for this flavor stated that there were quite a bit of mix ins. In my pint, there was only one that I could detect. New batch? Poor consistency between pints? Who knows? It didn't bother me at all though. The chocolate and chili combo was fantastic the whole way through the pint.
Overall, I liked the concept of the chili ice cream. The chocolate base and the heat of the chili was unique and awesome. The ice cream wasn't the smoothest pint I have ever had, but I still enjoyed it and if a craving for some chili and ice cream hit, this is the pint to get.
