My first experience with Steve’s Ice Cream was fantastic (Strawberry Ricotta), and I was excited to try out more of their flavors. The same time I bought that pint of Strawberry Ricotta, I also picked up this pint of Brooklyn Blackout Cake. If it came anywhere close to being as fresh and tasty as the Strawberry Ricotta pint, I would be happy. I took the pint home and finally got to sample it the other day. Here is how it was...
Brooklyn Blackout Cake is described as “Milk Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocolate Stout Cake Pieces and Dark Chocolate Pudding”. Sounded like a winner! I took of the lid and noticed the nice light brown color of the milk chocolate ice cream and a bit of an icy texture on the top of the pint. It turns out that the darker, icier portion was the chocolate pudding. I dug my spoon in to that section first. It was nice and smooth once it hit my tongue. Good texture, good flavor. The pudding portion was a little bit skimp though. There were only a few bites where you could totally detect the pudding portion. Maybe it was swirled/melted into the pint and I just couldn't tell? The milk chocolate base was extra creamy and smooth. It had a great flavor to it. It was not overpowering and was a pleasure to eat. The winner of this pint was definitely the chocolate cake pieces. They were small pieces, smooth, and swirled throughout the pint. I couldn't detect any “boozy” flavor from the stout, but it didn't really matter. They tasted just like a chocolate cake should taste like. They were awesome! The texture of them and the moistness they provided was great! This pint reminded me of the Chocolate Cake Shake from Portillos (Hot dog joint from Chicago). It was great!
Overall, this pint was super! A little more chocolate pudding portion and this pint would have been perfect. It was a fantastic blend of chocolate and cake and the texture throughout the pint was excellent! I've been very impressed with my first 2 Steve’s flavors! Can’t wait to try out their other ones, but I highly doubt they can be better than this one and the Strawberry Ricotta. This is a definite repeat purchase!
