READER REVIEW: Timothy's Review of Halo Top Chocolate

I was browsing the "specialty" frozen foods section at my local Fry's, and noticed a few pints of Halo Top ice cream. I decided to look them up on the internet and see what they were all about. I also wrote a quick email to them asking for a coupon/sample so that I could try them out. I got a response back from Ryan and he directed me to their Facebook site to print out a couple of coupons. I headed down to Fry's and picked up a pint of their chocolate ice cream and brought it home. First, a little background on Halo Top. Halo Top is a small ice cream producer based out of Los Angeles, CA. Their product was designed as the first low calorie, all natural, "light" ice cream on the market that is also high in protein. It sounded interesting for sure and I was excited to try it.

When I first picked up the pint in the store, I noticed how light it was. This pint of ice cream has only 240 calories in it. That is only 60 calories per serving! No wonder the pint was so light! Each serving contains 6 grams of protein, too. The ice cream is vegetarian friendly, all natural and no added junk. There is even a recommendation on the back of the pint to let this ice cream sit out for a few minutes so it can soften up just a tad.

I took off the lid and noticed the brown cocoa base of the ice cream. I took a bite of it and was pleasantly surprised. It was a bit icy at first but once it melted on your tongue, it was actually pretty smooth. The chocolate flavor was pretty good seeing that this pint has about 1/4 of the calories as most premium ice creams. You definitely won't confuse this with some other brands chocolate bases, but it was good in its own right. The chocolate flavor was not too sweet but it was just sweet enough to remind you that this IS a chocolate ice cream. I finished 3/4 of the pint but could not eat any more. I am too used to high fat, high calorie ice cream and this texture/taste was throwing me off. Overall, this pint was alright. It will never replace my usual premium ice creams, but for what its trying to accomplish, this pint succeeds on most levels. This would be a great product if you were diabetic or on a low carb diet! In the grand scheme of things, this ice cream would usually get a C or D rating, but for what it's trying to do and in its own little niche, this gets a B rating.

Where Timothy Found It: Fry's
