READER REVIEW: Elliot's Tale of Two Mint Chips - McConnell's Mint Chip & Graeter's Mint Chocolate Chip

Here we have a Reader Review recently submitted by Elliot comparing two of the best mint chocolate chip ice creams around:

McConnell's Mint Chip takes liquid bittersweet Guittard Chocolate and pours it into their ice cream during the churning process. The chocolate breaks evenly into relatively small chips, suspended in a peppermint infused version of their decadent, 18.5% butterfat, <10% overrun base. This is the kind of pint that makes you question the whole movement of creating flavors that rely on piling unusual flavors together. I am all for innovation, but the classics done perfectly are truly satisfying. I could pile on a ton of superlatives, but, really, the point is that McConnell's in it's plain-looking, unassuming container, is as a perfect of a mint chip ice cream as I've scooped.

The Graeter's version of mint chip has see-sawed over the years between containing artificial coloring and not. This iteration of their mint chip pint does not have the electric green look it once did. The Peppermint flavored pint is their second best seller, behind Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip.

About 50 years ago, Will Graeter decided to add chocolate to their ice creams. Liquid Peter's (Cargill) chocolate is added as the stabilized ice cream is spun in; and once it is frozen they use a paddle to break the frozen layer of chocolate into randomly sized pieces – some are too large to fit in a spoonful. Soy oil keeps the chocolate from freezing rock solid.

This very blog is full of comments expressing awe and wonderment at the discovery of over-sized pieces of waxy chocolate in a pint of Grater's, implying bigger is better. I did not know that was the measure. I believe balanced is better. I am all for adding great chocolate to ice cream. I don't see Peter's as great chocolate and or the appeal of huge slabs of it.

That said, we live in a world where the uninformed often still choose Breyer's, and, compared to that, this is good, ceraceous chocolate chunks notwithstanding.

  1. Did you know that Peter of Peter's (waxy) chocolate used to be a candlemaker before he married a chocolate maker's daughter? Maybe that's why you find his chocolate ceraceous!
