READER REVIEW: Timothy's Review of Ben & Jerry's Spectacular Speculoos Cookie Core

After my recent pint of Peanut Buttah Cookie Core, I was very impressed with these new Ben & Jerry's offerings. I was so impressed that I decided to purchase the other two flavors of the new "core" series. I decided to crack open the Spectacular Speculoos Cookie Core one for lunch today. If it was anywhere as good as the Peanut Buttah one, I would be a happy man.

The Spectacular Speculoos flavor was described as "Dark Caramel & Vanilla Ice Creams with Speculoos Cookies & a Speculoos Cookie Butter Core". I'll be honest, I had no idea what a Speculoos cookie was. I had to Google it. Turns out, it is a Belgian biscuit cookie. Ever had a Biscoff cookie? That is probably the best way to describe them. Biscoffs are a bit more sweet/delicious but they are at least semi comparable if you need something to reference.

I took the lid off the pint and I noticed that this pint was almost separated right down the middle. Vanilla on one side and the dark caramel on the other. The cookie core was peaking through right in the center. I took a bite of the caramel side first. Not sure what the difference between Ben and Jerry's regular caramel and dark caramel ice creams are. Maybe just the darker color? I couldn't really tell a difference in flavor. It was still good ice cream though. I tried the vanilla next. Same great B&J vanilla that everybody is used to. The 2 flavors worked well together and unfortunately were the highlight of the pint. I dug deeper into the pint and found some pieces of the Speculoos cookies next. This is where the pint went a bit downhill. A few cookie pieces were soft and chewy, while a couple of random cookie pieces were square shaped, hollowed out, plain tasting biscuits that were a little crunchy. The taste of these hollow pieces reminded me of an animal cracker. They were weird. The soft chewy pieces of Speculoos cookies were plentiful. They tasted like a mix between a Biscoff cookie and a ginger snap but with less of a "bite" and not nearly as sweet. They were just ok. I scooped out a piece of the core next. This is where the pint went all wrong. The "core" tasted like eating cold margarine with a slight nutmeg/gingerbread aftertaste. It was incredibly smooth but not in a good way. It left an odd film in my mouth and was not enjoyable at all. A few bites in and it's confirmed I am not the biggest fan of cookie butter. I went from the best core possible (Peanut Buttah), to probably the worst core ever. The taste, texture and after mouth feel were just all wrong! I try my best to never leave any ice cream behind. For review purposes only, I begrudgingly finished the pint ;-).

If you absolutely love Speculoos cookies, this might be worth a try. Even then, it was one of the worst pints of Ben and Jerry's I have ever tried. I would never buy this pint again and I don't see it as having any lasting appeal. The vanilla and dark caramel ice creams were the only saving grace to keep this from getting an F. I hope my last "core" flavor that I am going to try tomorrow (Boom Chocolatta) is better.
