I've been eating tubs of Blue Bell for more than three years now, and it's always nice to see an old flavor that I haven't yet tried rejoin the rotation. This month, Blue Bell is offering Caramel Sundae Crunch, which hasn't been on sale since 2010, so after checking the recall codes and determining that my tub was safe, I decided to give it a try. Blue Bell describes this flavor as "combines a rich caramel ice cream and a caramel swirl with the crispy crunch of sugar cone pieces coated in dark chocolate". Since all of these ingredients sounded appealing, I was eager to get started!
Opening the lid, one observes a couple of nice-sized chocolate coated squares, and a generally beige complexion to the base ice cream. Digging in with the spoon, I was immediately impressed with the quantity of mix-ins. These big chocolate squares proliferate throughout the tub. Even better, they taste great. The coating is a nice rich dark chocolate that lingers on the tongue. And they crunch! The sugar cone pieces are thick and crunchy, more substantial than a waffle-cone, almost like a slice of a rice-krispy treat. The mix-ins work nicely with the base caramel and the caramel swirl, which winds its way throughout the concoction. The base has a light rather than heavy caramel complexion, and the swirl is on the light side as well, it isn't the thick ribbon that permeates the "caramel turtle cheesecake" flavor, but it tastes good anyway. As one digs through the tub and the ice cream melts, the chocolate mix-ins soften a bit, creating a nice synergy in the mouth between caramel and chocolate.
Overall, I was quite impressed with Caramel Sundae Crunch. It delivers what it promises, and at 190 calories per serving I am sure I will try this flavor again. Yesterday, I had a tub of Blue Bell's "Happy Tracks" flavor, a solid "A" in my book, and while Caramel Sundae Crunch doesn't quite have the depth and richness to reach that level, it comes pretty close, earning an "A-".
