READER REVIEW: Elliot's Review of McConnell's Milk Chocolate & Raspberry Jam

I've written about many flavors of McConnell's on this site, and I'm not through yet. I'd like to start out here by recapping a bit of information about McConnell's. McConnell's is a family owned dairy in Santa Barbara, California. (Most ice cream companies are not a dairy.) They produce their ice cream base from scratch, using local raw milk and eggs. Their products contain no stabilizers, fillers, or additives. All of their variegates including jams, pastries and such are made in house, though they regularly feature ingredients from long time partners like Guittard and Valrhona. Their 18.5% percentage butterfat and <10% overrun base is best of breed; the gold standard for both ultra premium and artisan ice cream. They churn their ice cream in a "hot-rodded" customized dough mixer designed to minimize the amount of overrun (air) whipped into their ice cream.

Milk Chocolate Raspberry is the “milkiest” chocolate in McC's stable. Even dark chocolate lovers may be surprised at their affinity towards this smooth, lighter milk chocolate. The combination of milk chocolate with waves of raspberry jam completes the simple equation, resulting in a well balanced flavor. The house-made jam features central California raspberries from producers in their own backyard. The texture is silky and flawless, avoiding potential iciness a jam component may bring.

The combination of lighter chocolate and tart raspberry is a sleeper, one I know first hand many would look past in favor of the tried and true. I had modest expectations for how much I'd enjoy this flavor. Would something like roasted peanuts or peanut butter cookies go well with this? You know it. Does it work well without any additional toppings or mix ins? 100%. Look at the photos and you'll see that this pint is relying on the basic elements with which it's constructed to deliver the goods. These photos are not an illusion. This is exceptionally great ice cream.
