With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I'm sure all of you have taken care of dinner reservations, flowers and sweet treats. If you "know someone" who hasn't, let's take a look at a V-Day classic in ice cream form : McConnell's Chocolate Covered Strawberries, y'know, "for a friend".
This pint is a flavor the new owners of McConnell's released in 2013. The chocolate covered strawberries flavor is comprised of local Santa Barbara, CA organic berries in their sweet cream base with splinters of bittersweet Guittard chocolate. It’s quite reminiscent of a chocolate-covered strawberry.
This is not something you chomp on like movie theater popcorn. Make that your mantra, and you'll navigate this pint perfectly. Many have sworn off of any ice cream made with frozen fruit because chewing on icy fruit pieces is not good eats. By using real fruit, McConnell's is able to balance simple, complementary flavors, providing the platonic ideal of chocolate covered strawberries in ice cream form. They knew using a jam or swirl instead would have been a mistake. Your part in the social contract here is to let each bite melt on your tongue, rather than go Pac-Man on this flavor.
All the major components are in harmony. Sweet cream loves strawberry. Strawberry loves chocolate. Chocolate and sweet cream go together extremely well. The taste when they all come together is so right. It is as though you've introduced a few good friends to each other and they've hit it off. There's romance in this pint.
