Yes, technically we're right in the middle of spring, but down in the deep south, where I and Blue Bell are located, summer arrives in May, and with it come flavors like Southern Blackberry Cobbler, which the label describes as Creamy ice cream with a luscious blackberry flavor combined with flaky pie crust pieces and a blackberry sauce swirl. This sounds like it could be modestly refreshing on a hot day, so let's crack it open and see what awaits.
Peeling off the lid, I can't say I'm overly impressed. This looks like a generic vanilla ice cream with a weak-looking ribbon of blackberry sauce, and no pie crust pieces in evidence. But plunging the spoon in, things start to look better. The ice cream does seem to have a creamy, not flaky, texture, some pie crust pieces are unearthed, and the sauce turns out to be more plentifully distributed than initially indicated. And it's pretty tasty as well. While the base ice cream doesn't have much of the "luscious blackberry flavor" promised by the label, it is Blue Bell's creamy vanilla, a flavor that is always welcome on my spoon. I have never had a blackberry before so I can't say whether the sauce is true to that flavor, but it does taste good. It's a thick, fruity sauce that winds its way throughout the pint in abundant quantity. The pie crust pieces are a mixed bag. When you come across one, it tastes good - moist, flaky, and rich. But, these crust pieces are few and far between. Blue Bell is usually generous with this type of mix-in, but not here. And, they really are pieces, small flakes rather than large chunks of crust.
Southern Blackberry Cobbler lacks the richness and mix-ins of Blue Bell's best flavors. Still, I found the overall effect to be quite flavorful. Particularly when somewhat melted, the vanilla base, fruity swirl, and crust pieces gel together into a sweet treat. So rather than scoop this cold out of the freezer and eat it in your air conditioned kitchen, take it outside and expose it to that 80+ degree temperature. Then refresh yourself while enjoying a lazy warm afternoon on the porch.
