REVIEW: Edy's A Very Merry Eggnog (Limited Edition)

Not long after releasing their retitled holiday offerings in the form of Pumpkin Patch and Peppermint Wonderland, Edy’s wasted no time changing the name of their seasonal Eggnog flavor as well. A Very Merry Eggnog may look different than last year’s Eggnog, but features the same ingredient list. Just like in 2012, this will be available from November through December and Edy’s has this to say about their latest limited edition, “Our Eggnog ice cream is like the drink, but better! We've taken rich and creamy eggnog and turned it into a scoopable holiday treat. Somewhere between its cool burst of flavor and its essence of nutmeg, you'll discover the spirit of the holidays.

I wasn’t too fond of the flavor last year as is indicated by my D-rating, but I was willing to give Edy’s another shot. My palate has changed a handful of times over the course of my life, so maybe it was possible it had picked up the ability to really enjoy eggnog in general. This Grand edition comes in at 140 calories per serving, which is apparent by the pliable consistency as I scooped some into a bowl. After sitting down with a few servings, I was able to appreciate the taste a little more than last year, but even though now it’s very merry, Edy’s most recent release still sits below average for me.

  1. This was one of the worst ice creams I have ever had. By the way, the supposed eggnog flavor is actually tapioca...

  2. Dude, seriously, if you don't like eggnog in the first place, a review of eggnog ice cream is meaningless. Even if you gave it an A, that review would be meaningless because that could only indicate that the ice cream tastes nothing like eggnog. This is like the time that Dubba said he didn't like Ben & Jerry's pistachio ice cream even though he had never tried a pistachio and acted like pistachio ice cream was something from Mars. If I hate chocolate, I will necessarily hate all versions of chocolate ice cream that really taste like chocolate. The sensible thing to do would have been to just taste some eggnog again to check your palate and then not bother with this review. Hey, generally I really hate being punched in the face; maybe I'll go ask Manny Pacquiáo to punch me in the face repeatedly because I hear he's a great boxer. I'll let you know for sure if he's a great boxer by whether I end up enjoying being punched in the face.

  3. mhann24, I didn't see where he said he doesn't like eggnog in general, just that he didn't like this flavor when he reviewed it a year ago, but was willing to review it again on the chance his palate had changed since then.

If you want to critique this review, a better place to start would be its relative lack of information about how the ice cream actually tastes.

  4. I should have clarified "eggnog ice cream in general". I have no problem with the drink in general, but all the ice creams featuring eggnog flavoring are rather underwhelming. I didn't really go into detail on taste because it's the exact same product as their option from last year. Talent's Old World Eggnog was far far better than this.

And I've reviewed plenty of products that I came into thinking I wouldn't enjoy. The well-made products usually win me over even when I'm not a big fan of the theme. This one though...not so much.

    1. And granted, Edy's isn't a brand you go to to be "wowed" or impressed.

    2. That's putting it mildly. The flavor was bad enough, but it also had a horrific gummy texture
