REVIEW: Turkey Hill Chocolate Peanut Butter
One of the biggest drawbacks to moving to North Carolina about a year ago was that I basically severed my access to cartons of Turkey Hill ice cream. I used to be able to sample all the delicious limited edition flavors that rolled out each month, including one of my all time favorites, Pumpkin Pie, but now only one store in town carries their products. It also happens to only carry a very limited selection of their most basic options; most of which I’ve already reviewed. It had been a while since I’d been to this particular store, but after experiencing the plethora of peanut butter recently in Blue Bell’s Chocolate Peanut Butter, I decided to see how Turkey Hill could do with the same combination.
Turkey Hill’s premium mixture of milk chocolate ice cream swirled with roasted peanut butter came in at 180 calories per serving, a more than reasonable number when peanut butter is involved. After lifting off the lid, which lets you know that real ice cream is involved, the first thing I noticed was the light brown coloring of the milk chocolate base. Although it didn’t look like much at first, as soon as my scoop broke through the first layer, it was stopped by thick, stiff layers of creamy peanut butter and continued to do so throughout the entire carton. The base used by Turkey Hill is smooth, creamy, and not nearly as powerful as their standard chocolate, but in a good way.
The stripes of dense peanut butter, when scooped in a bowl, are involved in every single bite and build upon the smooth ice cream. They linger around far longer than the ice cream and give the tail end of each taste a bold, peanut butter ending. The classic combination, especially for the calories, ended up almost making it to the upper echelon of the rankings. With the addition of another element for texture, this could have easily achieved an A. It might be time for Turkey Hill to look into hopping on the peanut butter pie bandwagon.
