REVIEW: Arby's Salted Caramel Shake

After stopping by my local Dairy Queen to pick up this month’s featured Blizzard Treat, I was disappointed to see they were only offering the S’mores and Lemon Meringue Pie options from last month. On my way back home, I passed an Arby’s and remember hearing about the new Salted Caramel Shake they were offering. When their road sign advertisement confirmed my suspicions, I quickly turned in to try and salvage my unsuccessful attempt to secure the Tripleberry Brownie Blizzard. According to Arby’s, “What time is it? Time to indulge. Taste our decadent, creamy Salted Caramel Shake topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of Hawaiian Sea Salt.” I paid my $2.99 plus tax and then watched the drive-thru attendant make my order.

The tall plastic cup was drizzled with a thick, golden caramel sauce and then filled to the brim with the milkshake mixture. He then added a substantial amount of whipped topping from an unmarked aerosol can and finished the whole thing with a sprinkle from a pink saltshaker before placing a domed lid on top. The entire shake contains 680 calories, but as I would soon find out, I wouldn’t even get close to finishing this one. With minimal effort, the beige colored base quickly came up through the straw and into my mouth. Not only did this lack the density of a thick, hand-spun shake from much of the fast food competition, but the flavoring caught me completely off guard.

Instead of the salted caramel I had been expecting, I picked up more of a strawberry vibe; strikingly similar to the small strawberry shakes I used to get occasionally as a kid. The salty component had been sprinkled on top of the “whipped cream” so it couldn’t be incorporated with the shake itself and the caramel was still sticking to the side of the cup (even after I poured the rest of the shake into the trash) and failed to contribute at all. Lastly, the poor, foamy excuse for whipped cream on the top did little to enhance the misguided flavorings underneath. While this may have looked nice from the outside, this was one of the worst frozen desserts I’ve had in some time.

Where I Found It: Arby's

    1. Maybe you should try it out and see if I just got a poorly made one. I don't think that was the case though.

  2. I'm not saying this is a good shake, but for future reference, if there's something on the top or the sides and you want in your shake, all you have to do is use your straw to push it in there and stir it. I had someone tell me that they don't like whipped cream in their frappes because it is useless. I asked what made it useless, and the person replied that it just sits there on top until the end, when you finally have a bunch of whipped cream to sip all at once. When I suggested stirring it in, her mind was blown.

    1. I usually do this with all the other shakes I've reviewed. I tend to sample each component separately and then mix them in together, but this wasn't really whipped cream. Frappes have whipped cream you'd enjoy eating even by itself. Not the case here. The caramel swirl on the sides was impossible to remove from the sides with a straw. As soon as the swirl came into contact with the cold milkshake it froze up and held tight to the side of the glass, never to be heard from again.

  3. Whoaa, is the "informant" ever right..Arby's totally blew it with this. My wife and I love the salted caramels sold in Williamsburg, VA and we order a "small" version of this "new shake" and it didn't even look cool..it was served in a sterile old paper cup..but we were both glad we didn't get a bigger one. You can taste the fine nuances of chemicals, and fake flavorings..and nothing close to the flavor of anything "caramel" related. It's like..if Arby's didn't tell you what it was supposed to taste like..you really would be hard pressed to tell. Totally crap. Waste of money. It took several cups of strong coffee and a cigar to kill the lingering chemical taste...make this a VERY limited time offer!

    1. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that thought they REALLY missed the mark with this one. The advertisements had me really looking forward to this one too. Sounds like I should have adopted the strong coffee and cigar approach, the strange taste lingered around in my mouth for much longer.

  4. Tonight I had the same thing from Red Robin and I think it almost killed me. If you think about it, if you put salt into a blended mixture of ice, it will cause that mixture to drop in temperature very quickly as much as 21degrees c. I drank this shake and it froze me on the inside, I think my throat was actually damaged by the intense cold.

  5. Ok I don't know where you people reviewing this badly are at, but wherever it is just isn't doing it right apparently. Because when I go I get it a lot, it's so thick it literally takes me a full minute to get any shake out of the straw. It does not taste like strawberry at all it tasted a bit like the jamocha shake and it is sprinkled with Hawaiian sea salt, it not only had beautiful presentation with the caramel and salt, but it tastes amazing and is made to perfection. It is like this every time I go. I recommend anyone with bad reviews find a different restaurant if you really care and want to taste its full glory.

  6. I go 2 times a week to Arby's and I do get the salted Caramel Shake and I love it. I have never had a problem with it. I do think that it tastes a little bit like the Jamocha but it is still fantastic.
