OddFellows Ice Cream Co. in Brooklyn, New York

Although I’ve profiled a few difference ice cream operations from across the country, New York seems to have an especially high concentration of unique ice cream companies. Allow me to introduce you to the Brooklyn-based, family-run OddFellows Ice Cream Company. According to their website, “At OddFellows, we want you to fall even more in love with ice cream. We make super premium small-batch ice cream from scratch in our Williamsburg kitchen. Nothing tastes better than homemade! We do not believe in using hormones or artificial additives, and pasteurize our own mix in-house using cream, sugar, and locally sourced milk from Battenkill Valley Creamery, which allows us to infuse more nuanced flavors into our ice cream.

Here’s exactly how OddFellows came about: “Our story began in the summer of 2011, while Holiday was pregnant with her twins. One night, Mohan was sharing a few drinks with his buddy Sam, telling him about his wife’s latest food cravings: fried chicken, grilled cheese sandwiches … and salty-flavored ice cream. Being the fine fellow that he was, Sam whipped up his signature pretzel ice cream - famous from his wd~50 days - for Holiday. He packed a pint and brought it over to her. It lasted five minutes. His ice cream was unlike anything she had ever tasted. “You guys should sell this stuff,” she said to Mohan. He thought so too and approached Sam with the idea. Let’s say, it didn’t take much convincing. Nearly two years of planning later, in June 2013, OddFellows Ice Cream Co. is open for business in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.” Since then, they’ve added a ton of innovative homemade ice creams, cotton candies and sodas to their inventory.

While it’s not something I usually do with profiles, all of their flavors sound worthy of mentioning. Although they offer 8 to 10 ice cream flavors and 2 to 4 sorbets daily, here’s a list of some of their succulent sounding creations: Coffee & Coffee Soil, Miso Butterscotch Cherry, PBJ with Toast, Sesame Kumquat Pumpernickel, Manchego Pineapple, Mint Chocolate Chunk, Oatmeal Cookie Dough, Toasted Almond Coffee Beans, Chocolate Chunk, Burnt Caramel, Cornbread, Strawberry, Maple-Bacon Pecan, Tahitian Vanilla, Sprinkles, Chorizo Caramel Swirl, Blueberry Buttermilk Honey, Battenkill Sweet Cream, Blood Orange Cinnamon Sorbet, Lime Tarragon Sorbet, Grapefruit Jalapeno Sorbet, Strawberry Lavender Sorbet, Mango Sorbet and Lychee Sorbet. I’d kick myself if I passed up the Cornbread or the Chorizo Caramel Swirl, but they all look phenomenal.

  1. This week I went specifically for the beet ice cream with honey goat cheese and roasted pistachios. I wound up pairing it with celery sorbet, and it was incredible!

    The first time I stopped in I had the maple bacon pecan paired with cornbread. As if that wasn't good enough, OddFellows' waffle cones are hands down the best ever.
