REVIEW: Ben & Jerry's Truffle Trifecta (Walgreens Exclusive)

While Walgreens houses a few exclusive offerings from Haagen Dazs, this latest exclusive comes from the people at Ben & Jerry’s. Back in mid-April, a Twitter follower of mine sent me a picture of a Walgreens weekly ad in his area stating the impending release of a flavor made specifically for them: Truffle Trifecta. Although the official description was hidden, when the flavor finally made its way to a pharmacy near me the carton stated this was a combination of chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, fudge and caramel truffles. Judging from the pint’s exterior, this trio of truffles is nothing more than a chocolate coating surrounding a flavored interior filling. People who indulge in ice cream often tend to have formulated an opinion about Ben & Jerry’s chocolate base, but I’m still on the fence. It’s straightforward flavor and rich finish usually needs the assistance of some other ingredients to create a pint worth picking up, so we’ll see if the truffles can do the trick. It's also nice to see the Fairtrade symbol sitting just to the right of the title.

This particular arrangement of chocolate components tips the scales at 280 calories per serving, which quickly verifies its super premium classification. The first layer of my pint shows no hints of the truffles hiding below, but after plunging my spoon into the dark brown base, it isn’t long before my path is blocked a few of the small chocolate cups. My first bite of the chocolate ice cream is smooth, simple and exactly how I had remembered. The only complaint I have with Ben & Jerry’s chocolate base is that sometimes it tends to drown out the taste of some of the other ingredients, especially if they aren’t chocolate as well. Seeing as how every truffle looks identical from the outside, it’s a guessing game as to what the filling will be made of whenever you land one on the end of your spoon.

These dime-sized candies are plentiful and each has a thin chocolate coating that cracks away with little effort. The first type I land is of the fudge filled variety and adds little contrast to the rich ice cream besides a more intense chocolate flavoring. The second, the caramel truffles, are much like the ones found in Triple Caramel Chunk and release their sweet buttery innards once broken open. The classic combination of chocolate and caramel work together well, but simply can’t compete with the last truffle type. The marshmallow kind were not only favorite, but the sticky interior most effectively offset the powerful traits of the ice cream. After taking a bite containing all three truffles with the chocolate base, I couldn’t help but feel I had experienced this combination of tastes elsewhere. Then I realized this was very similar to their famous flavor, Phish Food. If I’m craving chocolate, caramel and marshmallow, I’ll be sticking to the fudge fish and gooey swirls contained in that.

  1. Did you the note on Dubba's review over at OSS stating that there are TWO B&J's chocolate bases? It was news to me, but worth mentioning. The names escape me at the moment, but I believe this pint contains the lesser used of the two.

    1. Yeah, I definitely noticed that when I was reading through. I'm not too sure that's the case though. The only slight variation to their chocolate ice cream I've seen came from Peanut Butter World which is described as a milk chocolate ice cream with peanut buttery swirls & chocolate cookie swirls. All the other flavors featuring chocolate ice cream seem to be the same and taste identical in my opinion. I think if they had two different formulas for their chocolate base they would mention it, but who knows?

The one featured in this flavor didn't seem any different from any of the other times I've tasted it.

    2. I've never noticed any difference myself, but I was curious to hear another opinion. I haven't tried this ice cream yet, but I personally might have added a thick chocolate swirl similar to what you'd find in a Moose Tracks ice cream. That certainly would have helped set it apart from Phish Food, if nothing else.

    3. Agreed. A Moose Tracks thick fudge swirl would have done wonders in this flavor.

  2. I've had this. Definitely better than a C...

    1. Everybody is certainly entitled to their own opinions. I like seeing what other people would rank the same product.

I just don't think I'd make the special trip to Walgreens to pay the $4.99 a pint for it again. Just didn't seem that special to me.

Would you give it an A or a B?

    2. I'm not sure if I would give it a B+ or an A-, but I would buy this flavor again. I mean, who dislikes eating truffles? Then if you put them in ice cream, it's even better. It's a privilege to be able to eat truffles in delicious chocolate ice cream.

    3. You sound convincing when you put it that way. I ranked this flavor in comparison to other offerings from Ben & Jerry's and that put it in the middle of the road for me. In my opinion, they have a lot of options better than this one.

    4. I was looking forward to trying this new flavor. I tried it tonight and am quite disappointed. I love chocolate ice cream and there are not too many I would turn down, but I would not buy this one again. I would rate it a C or lower as well. Which truffles you were eating were too small to be identifiable unless you were going to eat one at a time and analyze it while you were eating it. The favors of each truffle were too small to have much impact on the overall taste. There was nothing that was that spectacular about it. I will stick with B&J Chocolate Therapy with some Talenti Salted Caramel!

  3. Still haven't seen this pop up at the stores around me. I guess Florida isn't the state to live for getting new products first.

    1. It took a while for it to show up in North Carolina too. I'm sure it's trickling down your way though.

  4. Because you gave it a "C", I almost wrote this flavor off. However, I am curious if I'd rank it higher; perhaps I'll buy it. I'm sure, like me, you've had Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Base many times at this point, and it's probably not as exciting as it once was; do you think that affected your ranking? I think it does affect mine, so I do try to interval out my exposure to it.

    1. That could have definitely been the case. It's not really that this is unexciting, but rather that the chocolate ice cream overpowers the small truffles. Unless I had been looking specifically for the review, I probably would have had no idea if I had just chewed into a marshmallow, caramel or fudge truffle.

  5. Does anyone know the 12 digit UPC number on this pint?

  6. Awesome thanks so much. My Walgreens tells me they can special order by UPC

    1. Great news. Let me know if you end up getting it!

  7. Yes this does work. I gave the UPC to the manager at my local store and he worked with their ice cream distributor to get the flavor in. I now have 2 pints and can't wait to try it.

Thanks so much and for anyone else who wants this, I suggest asking the store manager.

    1. Glad to hear this worked out. I had no idea you could even do that.

  8. Where in NC did you find this? I've been looking around Durham but I still haven't found it :(

    1. I'm in Asheville, so not that close to you unfortunately. I had to check out a few different Walgreens before I found it.

      Best of luck!

    2. Ok, thanks! Maybe I will try the UPC thing as well :)

    3. You should. Sounds like it worked for Mike!

  9. I seriously can't remember the last time (if there ever has been one) that I thought any ice cream was straight up gross, but I did not enjoy this flavor at all. I guess I should put a disclaimer that I'm not a huge chocolate fan in general, but I was ok with the base. The mixins, though.. ugh, all I could taste was a weird saltiness - almost like candy corn - in all three truffle flavors. I was really curious to come here and see what you had to say about it. I guess it's just me, but I'd give it a D. Or is there such a thing as an F+? I can imagine worse things, but I'd never eat this again.

    1. Although I didn't seem to hate it quite as much as you did, I thought it was one of the worst Ben & Jerry's flavors I've had in a while. No Ben & Jerry's flavor has ever gotten a D by me, but this one came close.
