REVIEW: Ben & Jerry's Banana Peanut Butter Greek Frozen Yogurt

For whatever reason, I've stayed away from the Greek frozen yogurt line from Ben & Jerry's. When I buy frozen yogurt, it's typically because I'm trying to save a few calories, but these pints are barely any better than the full-fat flavors. Added with the fact that the tangy taste of Greek yogurt has yet to win me over, Ben & Jerry's has some serious obstacles to overcome before I even began. Looking over all the available flavors, Banana Peanut Butter easily beat out offerings like Blueberry Vanilla Graham and Strawberry Shortcake. Since I've only had Greek yogurt a few times, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from the banana Greek frozen yogurt with peanut buttery swirls, but I wasted no time taking off the top.

The first layer of their Greek frozen yogurt looks identical to their ice creams, even showing off some of the peanut buttery swirl that managed to sneak to the top, but the difference is made evident as I scooped out my first bite. Banana Peanut Butter still contains 210 calories per serving, which is only slightly less than their standard offerings, but the lighter base has a completely different feel when compared to their ice cream. This is slightly softer, easier to scoop out and melts down faster. The banana base leads with the unique taste of slightly tangy Greek yogurt, then incorporates the sweet banana flavoring from flavors like Chunky Monkey, and finally finishes with the richness of the peanut butter that makes its way into every bite. Because of the dominant nature of the Greek yogurt, some of the offsetting sweetness from the bananas is drowned out, but I grew to appreciate the full bodied flavoring after just a few bites.

On numerous occasions throughout the pint I ran across some heavily concentrated chunks of the peanut buttery swirls. These thick, chunky portions of peanut butter were reminiscent of those found in What A Cluster, and although they weren't overly salted, the natural saltiness complimented the banana Greek frozen yogurt. The bites including these hunks of peanut buttery swirl surpassed my expectations for what I thought this flavor was capable of, and only continued to get better as I became more accustomed to the taste of Greek yogurt. Although I still prefer their full-fat flavors, this was a nice change of pace and remained dense enough to still feel like a super-premium. This pleasant first experience with their Greek frozen yogurt lineup, coupled with the new releases, has me convinced to try some of the other flavors.

  1. The strawberry shortcake(180kcals) one is actually quite good as well I was shocked, and has converted me to be honest. One thing to is I really dont like blueberries but the blueberry graham cracker (200kcals) one is equally as good.

I realize you are more of a ice-cream guy but have you thought about doing a frozen yogurt section as well to branch out a bit?

    1. I'm going to pick up a few more pints of the Greek Frozen Yogurt after trying this.

I have a few frozen yogurt selections I've reviewed (Kemps, TCBY and now this), but I'm going to start including a ton of different things here soon.

  2. I'd love to try this. I'm on a personal quest to find a banana ice cream (even if it is yogurt!) here in the UK, but it's a virtually non existant flavour it seems :( The combination of banana and peanut butter sounds close to perfection to me. I hope this flavour, or something similar, will find it's way across the pond!

    1. We're definitely spoiled in the US by Ben & Jerry's with all their banana offerings. First Chunky Monkey, then Banana Cream Pie and now this. I still haven't found their Banana Split, but will certainly be scooping some up if I ever run across any.

  3. The Greek yogurt flavor threw me off at first, but I eventually grew used to it and came to enjoy it. Would I buy this again? Probably not, but I have been tempted on a couple occasions simply because I like bananas and LOVE peanut butter!

    1. I felt the exact same way. The Greek yogurt took some getting used to, but then it just continually grew on me as I worked my way through the pint.

  4. Would you say the banana flavor is close to laffy taffy banana?
I'm contemplating buying a pint. And does it have a slimy yogurt texture when it melts?

    1. It's not as artificial tasting as the banana flavoring you'd find in Laffy Taffy.

And no, none of the slimy yogurt texture. You should pick up a pint...it's still my favorite Greek Frozen Yogurt flavor from Ben & Jerry's.

  5. One more thing, was it super tangy like regular greek yogurt.
I've noticed brands like yoplait have little tang then oikos is almost unbearable. I've heard someone describe the tang similar to sour cream. Would you agree?

    1. It has a slight tang, but it was something I started enjoying the more I had.

It's comparable to the tang found in some Yoplait versions, but not unbearable by any means.
