REVIEW: Three Twins Sea Salted Caramel
Whenever I break a new company into the blog, it's usually best to do so with something straightforward. Since nearly every creamery has a salted caramel flavor these days, I tend to go that route if possible. Flavors like Jeni's Salty Caramel and Talenti's Sea Salt Caramel made impressive introductions, so hopefully Three Twins Sea Salted Caramel can do the same. Adorning the outside with animated artwork and bright colors, Three Twins has included an alchemy of cream and sugar that's worth its taste in gold inside this container.
Browsing through the literature on the pint, it's nice to see that Three Twins supports Ice Cream For Acres. Focusing on land conservation, each pint purchased apparently saves six square feet of rainforest, a tally that's totaled over eleven million acres saved and counting. Organic with a cause is a good enough reason to bring this ice cream in for some further analysis. Removing the top releases a slightly sweet smell and reveals a camel-colored first layer.
Taking my first bite of Three Twins organic ice cream, the consistency and quality are top-notch. Granted that everyone seems to have a salted caramel, they all have a unique taste and feel. This particular pint was the ice cream equivalent of Talenti's Sea Salt Caramel sans the perfect gelato consistency and truffle mix-ins. Despite missing the exact attributes that made Sea Salt Caramel an all-time great, this achieves a very similar overall taste. Not focusing on the burnt sugar aspect or saltiness, this deviated from what Jeni's Salty Caramel managed to achieve with her version.
Swaying towards the sweeter side of salted caramel flavors, this concentrated on sugar more than I had expected. Sweet caramel caresses your taste buds into submission well before the slight bite of salt comes into play. The initial smooth, creamy feel of the caramel ice cream is ideal and the complexity is unquestioned. Evolving as it breaks down, the change in flavors keeps me interested despite lacking any mix-ins. At only 200 calories per serving, the consistency isn't too light, nor too heavy.
I sure am glad founding twin, Neil Gottlieb, decided to forgo his MBA and go through with the idea of founding his own ice cream company. Mass producing twelve flavors, as well as rotating over one hundred in their scoop shops, I will continue to eat my way through their organic ice cream. Other available flavors like Chocolate Orange Confetti and Strawberry Je Ne Sais Quios will have me driving back to Whole Foods in no time.
