Some things are just meant to be. Ben & Jerry's teaming up with everyone's favorite red-headed stranger was certainly one of those things. They've brought their blue-ribbon ice cream making techniques and Willie brought his southern heritage and fruitful fan following. I've always adored Shotgun Willie's music and general outlook on life, so I have to try his peach cobbler ice cream.
Being from the South myself, I've had my fair share of this coveted dessert over the years. Peach has always been the crème de la crème of the cobbler lineup for me so it's safe to say I have some high standards when it comes to this southern staple. Sporting bright orange coloring, oodles of peaches and Mr. Nelson's smiling mug, there's pretty paper wrapped around this pint. The fact that they're using a peach flavored base is a bit off-putting, but I remain upbeat at the possibilities.
Ben, Jerry and Willie describe this as "Peach Ice Cream with Cinnamon-Sugar Shortbread Pieces & a Peach Swirl". As I pop the top and dig in, the peach ice cream peels back effortlessly, lacking the dreaded sorbet-like texture of many it's fruity brethren. And just like that my initial concern is incinerated. Not only is it supple, but it's also mild and pleasant. By not possessing an overly sweet characteristic, this base remains palatable throughout the entire pint.
The peach swirl asserts itself early and remains constant until the final spoonful is scarfed down. They also tend to avoid the teeth numbing texture that other fruit mix-ins have the tendency to do. The cinnamon-sugar shortbread pieces are crazy. Crazy for trying...to be in every single scoop I take. Because that's exactly what these mix-ins attempt to achieve.
I don't think I had one bite that wasn't scattered with peach pieces and shortbread bits. The succulent cinnamon-sugar shortbread chunks remain crunchy and were the perfect compliments to the delicate peach ice cream and tart peach swirl. This one was certainly a tall drink of water, but with all the competition, I just can't give it the thumbs up.
